So many thoughts. I can’t help but feel a sense of double consciousness when I see people enjoy my work. Are they enjoying it genuinely or is it the social context around it. Second time I’m reading your work and it really resonated with me. Thank you.
Please tell me more about the double consciousness you feel when you see people enjoying your work. I felt similarly at one time because mostly white people read and enjoyed my work. Now, BIPOC readers are responding. I finally feel like I am meeting my audience. I’m glad my work is resonating with you.
For what it's worth, I feel my own sense of double and triple consciousness about it. Maybe worth adding to the conversational queue we mentioned in the other thread, along with some of the ideas in this note: https://substack.com/@charliegilkey/note/c-42945187
Marc, if we go there, I'll try to remember to give a hat tip to you in whatever we end up doing.
I love you and I love this post. We could have a long conversation about this government and equity that’s for sure. It’s one of those words that gets tossed around a lot and unfortunately signifies very little in our racist culture. I am fortunate to live in a community full of artists, talented in so many ways. They always thank folks for “supporting“ their work, and I always say I’m not supporting you, I am benefiting from the beauty you provide. I don’t support my attorney who recently updated our wills. I don’t support my surgeon who performed brain surgery on me a year ago (though, I probably did help pay for his family trip to Hawaii 😂). And so on. What I am trying to get at too early in the morning I think we need to turn around the way we express our gratitude to Artists and particularly to Black and other artists of color. We need to pay for the privilege of receiving your gifts just as we pay for all other “services“. I love your writing. And I can’t wait to hear more of it. and I want to pay my fair share. Hope I’m making a modicum of sense. Please forgive the sloppiness of my morning effort. 💚
Thank you, and you're absolutely right. We need to change how we participate in the arts community and stop treating it as an "extra."
Tyler Perry was criticized and praised for creating his own studio in Atlanta and for other work that he did. I don't always agree with Tyler Perry, but I can understand why he did it.
It's not just the government. It's systems. It's people. It's internalized and externalized racism. There are so many barriers for Black artists. Beyoncé is a unicorn. We don't all have billions to at our disposal to bypass the systems created to keep us out.
For about two months last year, I had a crush on a Bosnian modern classical music composer because, among many other things, he wanted to disrupt music education. He hated the punishing way children were being taught music.
I love creative disruptors, and bad ass women! Adding to your comments, I know this is stating the obvious, but women artists and particularly women Artists of color are clearly given the least respect which includes an expectation that they charge less for their art. Aaargh!
I know that quote and it just pisses me off. I’ve known a lot of black women in my life and except for one individual they have all been outstanding in their very diverse ways of being in the world. Not that they should have to be. It just happens to be true. The bullshit of that disrespect on both the personal level and systemic level is unfathomable to me even as I Understand it given our country’s history.
Interesting article based on the fact you have a reputation for scamming people and ripping off those who trust you Kerra.
The question of whether social media is protecting abusers is an important one. Additionally, the concept of karma and the balance of justice are thought-provoking. I'd love to hear your thoughts
Check out this article where facts are presented about Kerra, lets see how long this lasts before truth and facts are deleted and blocked…?

I guess I love the creative disruptors.

I'm "liking" your comment to agree with your statements. As Malcolm X said, "The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman."
